Armored Core: For Answer

The 046AC1190, commonly referred to as the Aegis Destroyer, is one of the most common naval enemies encountered throughout Armored Core 4 and Armored Core: For Answer.

Overview[]

Aegis Destroyers are BFF-designed long-range missile cruisers most commonly employed in an escort role to support other naval units. The Aegis Destroyers cannot withstand NEXT-grade weaponry, and are typically destroyed by one or two hits from most laser blades and grenade cannons. Despite their comparably weak armor, Aegis Destroyers are considerably well-armed; equipped with long-range vertical missiles, a pair of naval cannons mounted side-by-side, and multiple machine gun turrets positioned around the missile batteries.

Individually they pose minimal threat to an average NEXT, although in fleet formations they are significantly more dangerous. This is possibly most evident in the Armored Core 4 mission "Break the White Lance" where a large fleet of Aegis Destroyers will launch salvoes of missiles at the player as they approach the flagship Queenslance. However, a skilled pilot can usually avoid most of the missiles and cannon fire from Aegis Destroyers long enough to complete their objective.

Trivia[]

  • In Armored Core: For Answer, the Aegis Destroyers have a strange tendency to fire backwards through their bridge if the player tries to stand on them.
  • The Aegis Destroyers seen in the Armored Core games closely resemble modern-day missile cruisers, most notably the Ticonderoga class cruiser, and Kirov class battlecruiser.
  • The destroyers seen in-game vary notably from their modern-day counterparts, in that the bridge section is moved further back towards the stern in order to make room for an array of vertical missile cells mounted within the deck of the ship. They also feature what appears to be a more advanced power plant behind the main bridge housing, replacing the engine of the modern-day equivalents.
