Anatolia's Mercenary is the common title given to the player character of Armored Core 4. Like all previous Armored Core player characters, Anatolia's Mercenary does not speak and is never given a name. In Armored Core: For Answer, he reappears more than a decade after the events of the previous game and is referred to by his NEXT's name, White Glint.

Anatolia's Mercenary was originally a Raven who served in the National Dismantlement War. He eventually became the guardian of Anatolia, fighting as one of the many Lynx in the Lynx War in order to help support the colony. He became a force to be reckoned with; despite being only Rank 39 in Collared, he defeated numerous Originals, and even directly caused the downfall of corporations. For his actions, Anatolia's Mercenary would later be given the title of "Hero of the Lynx War." When the war ended, he and Fiona Jarnefeldt left Anatolia after its destruction.

He reappears during the Economic War, where he has become Collared's Rank 9 Lynx, and he now pilots White Glint, a custom-made NEXT. As the pilot of White Glint, he now serves as the only Lynx and the ace-in-the hole of Line Ark, a maritime city-state that opposes the League of Ruling Companies. His presence is the only thing that prevents the League from outright annihilating them.

Biography

Pre-Lynx War

His new home, Anatolia

The man who would come to be known as the "Hero of the Lynx War" and "White Glint" was originally a Raven in the National Dismantlement War, before being rescued by Fiona Jarnefeldt and taking refuge in her colony, Anatolia, eventually calling it home. After the death of Professor Jarnefeldt, who single-handedly funded Anatolia, the colony entered a state of economic crisis, so in order to support his new home, the man agreed to Emil Gustav's plan: from Raven to NEXT-piloting Lynx and with Fiona as his Operator, he would act as the colony's sole mercenary to bring in money. The man would be known henceforth as "Anatolia's Mercenary".

His first mission is to eliminate terrorist forces at Gryphon, The Independent City. His success in this job impresses the corporations, thus presenting a number of opportunities for Anatolia's new Lynx.[3]

AmazighCombat

"Desert Wolf" Amazigh, the first of many Lynx to be defeated by Anatolia's Mercenary

He plays an important role in the defeat of the Maghrib Liberation Front (MLF), White Africa's largest anti-establishment group. First taking out their forces stationed at the Gelts'a Fortress,[4] he then eliminates their entire ballistic missile arsenal at the Eritrean Stronghold,[5] before finally ambushing and defeating Amazigh, one of their Irregular Lynx and their iconic hero, at the Former Peace City, effectively crippling them.[6] In revenge, the remnants of the MLF launch a surprise attack on Anatolia, where the mercenary is forced to fight without Primal Armor for fear of rendering the colony inhospitable. Despite the setback, he successfully defeats the attackers.[7] His final battle with the group is at the Nasser Oil Refinery, where he defeats surviving MLF Irregular Lynx Sus.[8]

The man's actions would later trigger a war between the corporations. Having proven his worth to corporation Global Armaments (GA), they tasked him with eliminating the personnel in one of their facilities, Hejde Arsenal, which not only belonged to the GA subsidiary GA Europe, but was also supported by fellow Pax corporation Akvavit.[9] This attack on the facility was used by Akvavit as an excuse to wage war on the GA Group. The ensuing conflict would make up the latter events of Armored Core 4, the Lynx War.

Lynx War

Anatolia's Mercenary displayed considerable combat ability, earning him a strong reputation among the factions. This recognition delighted Emil, because the mercenary's might and the war could be used to lead Anatolia to a new golden age. Fiona, however, dreaded their Lynx's rising popularity.

Anatolia's Mercenary Sea of Blood

Dornier Mining Station was where he claimed his first victory over an Original

His skills grew to the point that he was likened in strength to the Originals, powerful Lynx who have been piloting NEXTs since the time of the National Dismantlement War. This would prove to be more than apropos when he was tasked to retake GA's Dornier Mining Station. The area, now occupied with Aldra forces, was a valuable site for GA, and there, Anatolia's Mercenary faced and defeated not just the Aldra Normals and turret emplacements, but also the powerful Sherring, the Rank 14 Original, who commended the former Raven for besting him.[10]
10-1-2010 5-23-31 PM

The destruction of the Queenslance (middle) took the Bernard and Felix Foundation out of the war, and nearly caused the total collapse of the corporation.

Much like the MLF, the powerful Bernard and Felix Foundation (BFF) took heavy damage from the Lynx's actions. With the GA Group as his main client, his efforts resulted in devastating defeats for BFF. One such occasion is his victory over BFF's top Original, Mary Shelley, the "Empress" of BFF.[11] In a back-breaking move, he single-handedly destroyed their heavily defended headquarters, the massive cruise ship Queenslance, thus taking the corporation out of the war.[12] Silent Avalanche, an elite BFF squad, still tried to fight despite the demise of their benefactors, but they too were eradicated by Anatolia's Mercenary.[13] Several more skirmishes occurred between him and BFF remnants in areas spanning from the Razghul Colony's Subterranean Facility,[14] the Zextex Global Airport,[15] and even the Kojima energy facility Sphere.[16] Just like before, Anatolia's Mercenary triumphed over the BFF forces.

Anatolia's Lynx also developed a friendship with the Aspina colony's Lynx, Joshua O'Brien, the pilot of the NEXT White Glint and an old friend of Fiona's. Together, the two were purported to be unstoppable on the battlefield. When Sing, Asia's largest colony, was attacked by Akvavit's devastating Sol Dios, he and O'Brien intercepted them at the Pishin Lora desert, with Anatolia's Mercenary taking on the larger squad. They prevented Sing from being another colony crushed by Akvavit's behemoths[17]

The man accomplished many things in the Lynx War: he defeated countless Lynx, including high-ranking Originals such as Berlioz[18] and Anjou;[19] and he brought about the fall of Rayleonard by not only defeating the Rayleonard Group's elite NEXT team in a pivotal battle in the war,[18] but also single-handedly destroying Exavil, Rayleonard's headquarters.[20]

Anatolia in flames

At the end of Armored Core 4 and the Lynx War, he and Fiona took a leave of absence from Anatolia, believing the conflict to be over. However, Anatolia was soon attacked by Joshua O'Brien in the 00-ARETHA. Anatolia's Mercenary and Fiona rushed back to protect the colony. The mercenary managed to defeat O'Brien, but it was too late: Anatolia was already in flames. With the Lynx War over and the colony in ruins, Fiona took her partner and left Anatolia.[21] For his accomplishments, Anatolia's Mercenary would later be known as the "Hero of the Lynx War" by the time of the Economic War.[22]

For his accomplishments, Anatolia's Mercenary would later be known as the "Hero of the Lynx War" by the time of the Economic War.[22]

Economic War

The White Glint emblem used by him in the Economic War and by the deceased O'Brien is a stylized Eye of Horus, an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, royal power and good health.

More than a decade after the Lynx War, Anatolia's Mercenary is active during the Economic War, now siding with maritime city-state Line Ark as their greatest military asset and sole Lynx, with Fiona as his Operator once again. He uses the NEXT White Glint, a craft dedicated to the memory of his deceased friend Joshua O'Brien. Because his name is unknown to the Collared database, everyone refers to him by his NEXT's name.

White Glint's exploits have become legendary, with a representative of the League of Ruling Companies even noting him to be considerably more powerful than his rank suggests, to the point that they believe him to be too much for any single NEXT to handle alone. Rank 1 Lynx Otsdarva has become obsessed with defeating him, and holds him and Fiona responsible for Anatolia's destruction.[24] Serene Haze notes that White Glint's abilities are top class.[24][2]

During the final stages of the Economic War, the League decides to finally rid themselves of the Hero of the Lynx War, knowing fully well that once he was dealt with, Line Ark would be unable to resist them any further. They send in their strongest military assets for the attack: Otsdarva and the pilot of the NEXT Strayed, an up-and-coming Lynx.[24]

White Glint goes to defend Line Ark from the League's all-out assault

The battle takes place in Line Ark itself. When the two League NEXTs arrive, Fiona gives them the chance to withdraw, threatening to respond with deadly force should they refuse to leave. Otsdarva and Strayed continue with their mission and engage the White Glint, whom Ostadarva belittles. As the battle wages on, Fiona remarks that their foes are the same as she and the White Glint were during the Lynx War, pleading for the two enemy Lynx to question their own reasons for fighting. Eventually, White Glint is able to disable Stasis's boosters, thus causing Otsdarva to helplessly sink to the water, cursing his fate. White Glint turns to fight Strayed, who ultimately emerges victorious over the Hero of the Lynx War.[24]

During the final stages of the Economic War, the League decides to finally rid themselves of the Hero of the Lynx War, knowing fully well that once he was dealt with, Line Ark would be unable to resist them any further. They send in their strongest military assets for the attack: Otsdarva and CUBE, a Lynx with inhuman piloting skills. Line Ark learns of the League's plans, and, realizing the severity of their situation, they hire the pilot of the NEXT Strayed, an up-and-coming Lynx, to aid them in the upcoming fight.[2]

The battle takes place in Line Ark itself. When the two League NEXTs arrive, Fiona thanks Strayed's pilot and Serene Haze for their help, and the battle commences. Otsdarva, CUBE, and White Glint ultimately fall in battle, leaving Strayed the only confirmed survivor. Fiona once again thanks Strayed for helping repel the League, but she notes that with the White Glint gone, it may be the end for Line Ark.[2]

The loss of the White Glint is a heavy blow for Line Ark. Without their trump card and only NEXT, Line Ark's military power greatly diminishes, exactly as Fiona and the League had anticipated. Line Ark ultimately collapses after the destruction of Megalis.[25]

NEXT White Glint

During the Economic War, Anatolia's Mercenary pilots White Glint, a middleweight, all-white NEXT that bears Joshua O'Brien's emblem and shares the name of his NEXT. This White Glint is aesthetically different from that of O'Brien's White Glint; it bears resemblance to the Algebra's SOLUH NEXT frame, and its frame parts are completely custom to Line Ark. The NEXT also transforms for certain actions: during Over Boost, a myriad of boosters extend and open, and the head sinks into the core; when activating its Assault Armor, the craft's frame expands and certain parts gain additional armor. The NEXT is designed by Abe Marsh, the designer of O'Brien's White Glint.

White Glint is armed with two BFF-manufactured rifles: the 051ANNR on the right hand, and the 063ANAR on the other. It dual wields SALINE05 spread missiles on its back. Because of the way the shoulders of the arms were built, the NEXT cannot be equipped with Shoulder Weapons. In some cases, it can also reactivate itself after being disabled once.[26] Just like Joshua O'Brien's White Glint, the craft is built with extreme speed in mind.

Gameplay

Armored Core 4

Anatolia's Mercenary is the player character of Armored Core 4. Although the player is given a variety of standard NEXT schematics to choose from at the start of the game, Anatolia's Mercenary goes into battle using whatever NEXT the player has designed. Like every Armored Core game protagonist, Anatolia's Mercenary does not speak. The events which he experiences during the game will depend on whether the player has chosen to play either Normal Mode or Hard Mode.

Armored Core: For Answer

Anatolia's Mercenary appears in Armored Core: For Answer as an NPC siding with Line Ark, and as the pilot of the NEXT White Glint. He is once again partnered with Fiona Jarnefeldt, and is considered by the League as Line Ark's only military threat. In the game, his name is listed as "UNKNOWN" in the Collared database, and as such, he is referred to as "White Glint" because of the NEXT he uses. Like in the previous game, Anatolia's Mercenary does not speak, so Fiona speaks on his behalf. Anatolia's Mercenary is encountered in the missions "Defeat White Glint" and "Defend Line Ark", both of which take place in Line Ark. He can also be fought in the Arena.

The English-language version of the game erroneously states that Anatolia's Mercenary is female in Collared's Order Match biography and in the game's official Ubisoft website, despite Armored Core 4 (as well as Fiona in "Defend Line Ark") establishing him to be a male. Further adding to the confusion is that he never actually speaks in-game; Fiona speaks on his behalf, so Fiona is commonly mistaken to be the pilot of White Glint.

Game WG

White Glint in an introductory cutscene from "Defeat White Glint".

If the player chooses to accept the mission "Defeat White Glint", White Glint will appear as a hostile NPC and the target of the mission. The player is partnered with Otsdarva and sent to Line Ark to defeat White Glint in a two-on-one battle. Should the player inflict enough damage to White Glint, a scripted event will unfold, with White Glint disabling Otsdarva's Stasis by shooting its main thrusters and forcing the NEXT to sink into the water below, unable to produce enough thrust to escape. This will leave the player and White Glint to face off one-on-one. If the player chooses to commence the mission on Hard Mode, then White Glint will reactivate itself after the player has defeated it once, thus requiring the player to defeat White Glint twice in order to complete the mission. Defeating White Glint unlocks the NEXT's weapons for purchase at the store.

If the player chooses to play "Defend Line Ark", then White Glint will appear as a friendly NPC to assist the player in a fight against Otsdarva and CUBE. White Glint will be defeated in a scripted event, thus leaving the player to fight alone. Fiona will then apologize to the player for White Glint's defeat. Additionally, CUBE cannot be killed unless White Glint is defeated first. On Hard Mode, White Glint's AP will be far lower, making it more likely for him to be defeated early on. If the player completes the mission, then White Glint's parts will be unlocked for purchase at the store.

White Glint VOB

White Glint equipped with a VOB unit in Armored Core: For Answer's intro movie.

White Glint is featured in the game's intro movie, which begins with White Glint being prepared for sortie, with its rifles being delivered by helicopter and with a VOB equipped. Upon launching, he engages the enemy troops on his way to the Spirit of Motherwill, disengaging the VOB upon reaching the Arms Fort. He immediately takes heavy damage to the NEXT's core, loses his left rifle, and is knocked down into the ground below. As the the Spirit of Motherwill aims its cannons at him, White Glint prepares to activate its assault armor, and the movie ends.

White Glint also appears in many of the game's promotional material. It is on the cover of the game's box art, and is featured in trailers that reuse footage from the game's intro movie. Early trailers also show in-game footage of White Glint alongside a differently colored Line Ark.

Strategy

The following information is "gray area" content — it may not be completely factual, and/or falls under YMMV territory.

White Glint as an opponent in missions has unlimited energy, giving it permanent flight and infinite quick boost. As such, it will be continuously on the move, strafing and quick-boosting sideways in mid-air at mid- to long-ranges while shooting its high-powered, dual-wielded rifles and occasionally launching salvos of spread missiles, making it extremely difficult to hit. At close range, it can activate its Assault Armor, which can deal enormous amounts of damage, disable Primal Armor, and momentarily disable lock-on capabilities. Combined with its high Primal Armor rectification stats, White Glint can be one of the toughest, if not the hardest, enemy NEXTs in the game.

The easiest way to take White Glint, and most other NEXTs, out without much difficulty is to make use of two Kojima Missile launchers. Their extremely high power, anti-PA capability, and high tracking ability can literally obliterate NEXTs in as few as three to six missiles, depending on the target's defensive capabilities. Lure White Glint out into the open waters and fire the Kojima missiles as soon as you can get a lock. Sometimes, the missiles' flight time may run out before they hit; nevertheless, White Glint will get hit more often than they do miss. With this loadout, it will not take too long before the cover NEXT of AC:FA sinks into the ocean.

Watch out on Hard Mode however, it must defeated twice in the same battle as it will revive itself.

There is a nice glitch in "Defeat White Glint" that causes White Glint to become stuck (Not as stand still stuck, but can't move a lot stuck). At the lowest part at the two towers on Line Ark its huge caps which makes good rooms that only has one way out. The glitch is to get White Glint to boost inside one of the caps, and stand in opening. Since White Glint doesn't boost towards you when Otsdarva is alive, he will constantly side boost all the time. You can also get Otsdarva and CUBE to do this on the counterpart mission "Defend Line Ark" but it is more difficult. It may be easier with CUBE since he is much more of a close range Fighter, just make sure that he is going for you instead of White Glint, or simply just wait for Otsdarva and White Glint to go down first, then use Assault armor to defeat CUBE.
