Briefing[]

We've completed our analysis of information acquired by the research team during their exploration of the old fortress. A passage leading to a new subterranean Layered was uncovered.

A representative from the Artificial Intelligence Office is thought to be on-site and we've confirmed that the signals responsible for recent equipment disruptions originate there as well.

What is going on at this location? Might the AI scientist somehow be involved in recent events?

The only way we can hope to answer these questions is to go see for ourselves.

We're sending you into the facility to act as our eyes and ears in this matter. Locate the source of the signal and destroy whatever it is that's producing it. Good luck.

Walkthrough[]

As the final mission of the game, it does provide a certain challenge of sorts, although it isn't as difficult as some of the earlier missions. Most of the enemies you encounter in this level are boss-type enemies, which would require substantial firepower to bring down, so bringing meager weaponry is not advised.

The first part of the mission will lead you to a vertical shaft that will then lead you to a tunnel, with turrets popping from the ceiling. They're not necessary to destroy, but can be an annoyance to avoid their lasers. At the end of the tunnel, an I-C003-IN will be waiting for you. Expect to sustain damage from the get-go as this unit will likely to fire off its grenade launcher as soon as it has you in its sights, so do your best to avoid it. Although this I-C003-IN isn't necessary to destroy, it is one of the requirements for unlocking the secret item. Ultimately, it is up to you whether you wish to obtain it through the campaign or replaying the mission afterwards.

Regardless, the I-C003-IN will not be a pushover you can get past easily. Its repeated barrages of grenade rounds and missiles, combined with the confined space can make projectile avoidance rather difficult, so be mindful of your movements. As the I-C003-IN is rather durable, weapons with high firepower and decent fire rate are recommended against it, such as the Karasawa or missiles. Other weapons like rockets, chain guns and machine guns are also effective against it, as this I-C003-IN tends to use its plasma cannon more frequently than the earlier encounters, so take advantage of it.

Once the I-C003-IN has been destroyed, the following path will lead you down a tunnel with more laser turrets, popping from the walls instead of the ceiling, and then an elevator shaft. Down the elevator shaft is another tunnel with turrets appearing from both the walls and the ceiling. At the end of this tunnel, is a circular room with another I-C003-IN. Again, destroying it isn't a mission requirement, but is required for the secret part. If you're not going for the part, then it's better to ignore it and instead focus on activating the four panels on the side while avoiding the I-C003-IN's attacks. If you choose to engage it, make sure that you have enough ammo to deal with it and be very careful as this unit tends to employ more aggressive tactics than the earlier I-C003-IN.

After you have activated the four panels, it will drop you down a huge vertical shaft, with another tunnel at the bottom with multiple doors, this will lead you to the second part of the mission to face IBIS.

In the second part of the mission, you will encounter IBIS, the administrator of the second Layered, in a large open room. Upon activating 'System Phase 22-4', IBIS will begin the battle, often by firing off its 'pod' weapons on its 'wings'. It's best to avoid this attack as it does deal substantial damage if it connects. Whatever you do, it is not advised to remain stationary or walk while engaging IBIS, as it will then use its pods to fire off a continuous laser that deals more damage than its usual attack mode. However, this attack is easily avoidable if you stay out of its direct trajectory of fire.

IBIS' other weapons include a plasma rifle, a fast swinging blade, and a dual missile launcher. IBIS will often start flying after firing off a couple shots from its pods, often doing so to get behind you or flank you, so be mindful in your movements. IBIS' plasma rifle deals decent damage and stun, making it paramount to avoid this so as to not get caught in its chain of attacks. It is also generally inadvisable to engage IBIS head-on with a blade as it will employ its blade if you attempt to force melee combat, and it can swing it in rapid succession much like Nineball Seraph with its dual Moonlights, not to mention it can take off a good chunk of AP if it connects. Its dual missiles, while not as dangerous as its aforementioned weapons, can serve to distract you while you contend with its other weapons.

Note that IBIS will not follow a set pattern of attack, as it will adapt according to your setup: it will employ aggressive rushing tactics if you are using a slow heavy AC, while it will employ hit-and-move tactics if you're using a fast agile AC.

Dealing with IBIS would require substantial firepower as it does have high AP. However, due to its tendency to remain stationary as it attempts to use its pod weapons, it is vulnerable to most weaponry. After taking a certain amount of punishment, IBIS will loses its 'wings' and its pod weapons, leaving it to rely solely on its plasma rifle and its blade. Although deprived of its secondary forms of attack, IBIS is now more mobile and agile, and will glide around the battlefield at a high speed while constantly shooting with its plasma rifle and searching for an opening to use its blade. This is usually the most crucial phase in the battle, as you can secure an assured victory over IBIS, or allow IBIS to turn around a losing fight. Keep an eye on its movements and dodge its attacks accordingly, and don't shoot blindly as IBIS is agile enough to unwittingly avoid your attacks while it engages you (it is best treated as a hover-legged AC with a plasma rifle and blade).

Note that IBIS has an anti-missile system of its own, which is surprisingly effective. For that reason, missiles are generally not recommended as the main method of attack, as most of your missiles will end up being shot down or being dodged entirely due to its movements.

Once the IBIS has been taken out, the mission is over. The second part of the mission also has a secret part with the requirement of beating it under 2 minutes and retaining half of your AP by the end of it. It is possible to unlock both parts in one go, so build your AC and setup wisely if you choose to do so.

Trivia[]

  • Can obtain back part CWC-LIC/100. Destroy both Big White ACs.
  • Can obtain core part CCH-04-EOC. Finish the second part in under 2 minutes and have 50% AP.
