The Fires of Ibis was a cataclysm before the Coral War that involved the Coral substance found on the planet Rubicon 3.

Decades before the Coral War, the mysterious substance known as Coral had already been found within Rubicon 3, beginning its exploitation by human civilization as a new source of boundless energy.

Ground view of the Fires

The seed of destruction was lain when Professor Nagai, head of the Rubicon Research Institute, made an alarming discovery about Coral that sent him and the rest of the Institute into panic, leading them to deploy the Ibis series of C-Weapons to contain the situation. In the process, Nagai then created a massively destructive fire fueled by Coral that engulfed not just Rubicon 3, but the entire Rubicon star system as well. This devastation which turned Rubicon into a "Burning Star System," killed countless people and burned away the majority of life in the system, as well as destroying technology and infrastructure, wiping out all of the system's civilization.

The involvement of the Ibis series in the disaster lead to the cataclysm being remembered as "The Fires of Ibis."

Aftermath[]

The seeming destruction of the Coral in the flames rendered Rubicon 3 a barren wasteland, and for decades the planet was abandoned with its meager survivors left to pick up the pieces. The horrors traumatized the survivors, particularly Rubiconians like Ayre and the remnants of the Institute, which itself dissolved following their losses in the catastrophe.

Nearly half a century later, Coral is discovered to have reappeared on Rubicon, luring corporations to Rubicon 3 in search of the precious resource once more, setting into motion the conflict known as the "Coral War." In response, the organization Overseer desires to repeat the Fires to permanently stop the usage of Coral due to the substance's perceived threat from Overseer's point of view.[1]

Gameplay[]

In ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON, the Fires of Ibis is one of the background events affecting the game's plot as its consequences are a driving factor in the numerous, differing motivations of the game's cast. The disaster itself is the game's iteration of the world-changing background event frequently utilized in Armored Core games, such as the Great Destruction from the first title.
