A conflict that arises between the nascent corporation Navis and the megacorp Mirage approximately fifty-five years after ED 0203[1] over a new resource discovered by Navis. Navis had discovered in one of their regions a breadth of lost technology that proved the existence of a lost civilization.[2] Mirage demands that the resource be shared with the other corporations but Navis refuses to relinquish their hold on it, putting the two at odds.[3]

Crest Industries sides with Navis by supplying numerous of their own forces, their in-house ACs included, to combat Mirage on multiple fronts. When Mirage focuses on taking the Navis' resource mine, however, Navis' headquarters, Bayload City[4] is suddenly seized by Crest in a surprise betrayal.[5]

After much feuding, Crest pulls out due to extensive losses and Mirage overwhelms Navis. Despite this, Crest forces in the region refuse to withdraw and go rogue to continue the battle, only to be subsequently eradicated by Crest HQ themselves. The last rebel, Genobee — high-ranking member of the Ravens' Ark and previously one of Crest's most valued war assets — is defeated soon after, with his final words being warnings that the relics of the past and human arrogance will only lead to destruction.[6][7]

Meanwhile, Navis loses to Mirage their prized Borbos Mine, one of the region's sources of lost technology and one of Navis' last strongholds following Crest's treachery,[8] then ultimately crumbles after their attempt to control a lost superweapon goes awry.[9][10] Mirage immediately sends a team to secure the area but they are annihilated by weapons of unknown origin.[11]

The other major corporation Kisaragi quickly dispatches their own researchers to investigate the mine as well, which leads to them activating the facility's control devices. Kisaragi realizes too late the dangers the facility and its lost technology weapons pose but they urgently contract a Raven anyways in the vain hope of disabling the facility.[12] Despite their efforts, the facility unleashes an untold number of unmanned suicide weapons (later labeled "Unknowns") that proceed to wreak indiscriminate havoc all over the globe,[13] crippling all the major powers and nearly destroying human civilization itself.[14]

In the aftermath, the weakened big three corporations, Crest, Kisaragi, and Mirage unite to form "Alliance" in the name of reestablishing world order. The Ravens' Ark, meanwhile, dissolves due to the drastic drop in their forces from the cataclysm and their leader, Jack-O, is presumed dead until six months later when Jack-O resurfaces as the leader of Vertex, an organization dedicated to establishing a new world order led by Ravens. Vertex formally declares war against Alliance, even announcing a coordinated major offensive. In response, Alliance places bounties on the Ravens that side with Vertex, causing Jack to do the same to Alliance-aligned Ravens. A fierce struggle between Alliance, Vertex, and the independent Ravens and warlords then ensues over the course of the twenty-four hours preceding Vertex's attack.
