Paul O'Brien, better known by his title as City Police Captain, is a character that appears in Armored Core V. He leads the City Police, the military force under the control of Father, in the fight against the Resistance. He pilots the AC City Guard Unit 01.
Information[]
Paul O'Brien is the Captain of the City Police and one of the secondary antagonists of the game. It is shown that he despises the Resistance and will go to any lengths to destroy them, sending 2 of his own City Police Guards as well as an Armored Train to deal with them. When all of his subordinates proved no match for the Resistance AC pilot, he intervened personally to destroy him. However, as they were fighting. Chief himself intervened, claiming he was feeling hurt for the Captain "not inviting him to the party". Afterwards, the Captain was blasted by Chief's Giga Cannon (although it is unknown whether this was actually intended for the player or not), while being in total confusion and despair.
Personality[]
The City Police Captain is a rather hateful/disdainful person, expressing great disdain/hatred towards the Resistance (usually calling them "terrorists"), as well as the Corporation at a certain point. He also thinks very lowly of his own subordinates, as he called them "incompetent fools" and "brainless idiots" when the Armored Train they had failed to kill the player and also called them "useless idiots" during Story Mission 05 when the multiple City Police units also failed to take care of the player.
However, he is shown to be incredibly loyal to Father, as he was willing to go to resort to extreme measures to destroy the player to prove his loyalty to him, as evidenced in Story Mission 01 & 04, by sending his own City Police Guards to take care of the player, telling them to "eliminate all obstructions to law and order" and declares that as the mission of the City Police.
In Story Mission 05, he is also shown to have great disdain for the Corporation, as he called them "Corporation bastards". Afterwards, he declared everyone who stood in his way enemies and vowed to destroy those who did.
It is also implied that he fears Chief to a certain degree, as he showed signs of worry/panic when Chief abruptly appears in the Marine Facility during Story Mission 05. When he was seemingly betrayed (shot by Chief's Giga Cannon), he exhibited confusion and despair before dying.
AC City Guard Unit 01[]
Paul's AC, known as City Guard Unit 01, is a heavyweight, CE and KE focused reverse-jointed unit with multiple types of weaponry. It only appears once in the game, during Mission 05, as one of the two main enemy units (the other being Chiefs' Hanged Man). Among one of its main dominant characteristics is its higher than average AP and preference for long-range, hard-hitting weaponry.

Strategy[]
You will face the City Police Captain after the rest of the other City Police units are annihilated. It is likely you may have already taken damage beforehand so you may be a disadvantage at this point. However, it is possible to simply evade him and wait for him to come to you instead.
The City Police Captain will attempt to snipe you down from afar with his sniper cannon. It is paramount that you evade this as his sniper cannon is extremely powerful, easily able to take off 10000+ AP if hit. Rush in on him by ducking around the building. Preferably rush towards him via the watered path as he is less likely to be able to hit you from there. Once done, close in on the building where he is standing, he will have most likely dropped his sniper cannon and equipped his hangar sniper rifle. He will use that in conjunction with his laser rifle and shoulder KE rockets to it is also important that you dodge these as they can a lot of damage as well.
In terms of AP & defense, he has moderately high AP due to him being a heavy reverse-joint. He has extremely high CE defense but low KE defense and extremely poor TE defense. High power KE rifles or TE weapons such as pulse guns or pulse machine guns or laser rifles can put him down easily.
Trivia[]
- The City Police Captain's name is never implied/mentioned in game. He is referred to only as "the Captain of the City Police" in-game.
- It is unknown what exactly caused him to develop disdain towards the Corporation, but it is likely that it happened during the events of Story Mission 04, where the Corporation started installing 'strange weapons' in the City, despite the City Police objecting to the decision. This may have likely led to distrust between the 2 sides, and eventually led to Chief's alleged betrayal in Story Mission 05.
- He is the only City Police AC that isn't killed directly by the player.
