The Rubicon Research Institute (ルビコン調査技研) — alternatively, the Rubicon III Research Institute (ルビコン3調査技研)[1] — was a technological research, development and manufacturing organization headquartered in Institute City on Rubicon 3.

They are known mainly for their works centered on the use of the Coral substance native to the planet, such as the unmanned C-Weapons and the Ibis Series of Armored Cores, both of which weaponized Coral to deadly results. They were also the inventors in of Augmentation Surgery, having developed the first four Generations of the technology, which utilized Coral to enhance the abilities of humans slated to pilot ACs. However, these early iterations of the surgery came with significant shortcomings towards the humanity of the people subjected to them.

Other than their Coral-based technology, the RRI also manufactured Light Wave weaponry, which combined laser and pulse technology to fire energy projectiles.

The Institute became defunct when the Fires of Ibis devastated Rubicon. Though decades after, their works and even some of their former staff had survived the Fires, and later would affect the Coral War waged on the planet.

The Rubicon Research Institute specializes in Coral-based technology, along with light-wave tech not seen anywhere else. Coral has the unique property of dealing full damage against enemies due to AC parts lacking coral resistance. Their parts usually have organic, streamlined features, with an overall alien appearance. Both of their usable AC models have respectable stats for their weight class, along with optimal generator optimization support.

Institute weapons and internal AC parts tend to be lightweight and very good at what they're specialized at, but also puts a noticable burden on an AC's EN load. Their coral-powered generators are however, built to accommodate these requirements with their high EN output, capacity, and recovery stats, in a relatively lightweight design.

In ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON, the Rubicon Research Institute is one of the factions affecting the plot. Although defunct by the time of the story proper, their actions form the backbone of the backstory, and their technology appear in the form of NPCs and player-usable AC parts.
