V.VIII Pater is an Armored Core pilot active on the planet Rubicon 3 during the Coral War. He is a member of the Arquebus Corporation's elite combat unit the Vespers, and Arquebus' mercenary liaison for the likes of independent mercenaries such as C4-621.
Pater is a truly enigmatic individual. On one hand, he's courteous, friendly, and soft-spoken yet professional. Some of his fellow Vespers seem to treat him as the kid-brother of the unit, with V.V Hawkins and V.III O'Keeffe personally looking out for his well-being, something he has no resentment about in the slightest. On the other hand, Pater has this tendency to shift into a cold-hearted and greedy individual in times of great emotional stress, as if he has a second nature that overtake him during these times.
He is ranked 16/C in the ALLMIND virtual combat Arena.

Condition | English | Japanese | Audio |

Briefing, second line | "To all independent mercenaries—this request comes from Schneider of the Arquebus Group. The operation will take place in Grid 135, Southern Belius. Your objective is to destroy an MT squad sent by Dafeng, a Balam company—and a competitor. Grid 135 is a key foothold in Arquebus's efforts to conduct a Coral survey in the contaminated city. You, the independent mercenaries are the key to maintaining our lead in the Coral survey race. The Arquebus Group looks forward to news of your success. Briefing over—and happy hunting." | - | - |
"Destroy the Tester AC"[]
Condition | English | Japanese | Audio |

Briefing, second line | "To all independent mercenaries—this request comes from Schneider of the Arquebus Group. Dafeng, one of our adversaries allied with Balam, has introduced a new tester AC. It's a sample model from an external architect, featuring extensive assembly optimizations. In the hands of an experienced pilot, it will pose a threat far too great to ignore. This brings me to the request. Intercept delivery of the tester AC and destroy it. The Arquebus Group looks forward to news of your success. Briefing over—and happy hunting." | - | - |
"Destroy the Weaponized Mining Ship"[]
Condition | English | Japanese | Audio |
---|---|---|---|
Briefing, second line | "Raven. This request comes from Schneider, an Arquebus subsidiary. The mission will take place in the Bona Dea Dunes of western Belius. Our Coral investigation there is being blocked by the STRIDER, a Rubicon Liberation Front mining ship. You are to destroy it. The STRIDER is a mobile resource base that was extensively weaponized by the Liberation Front. Call it the crowning glory of their efforts to militarize into an anti-corporate force. Your attack will focus on the Eye, a giant laser cannon connected directly to the main generator. It's protected by a shield, which is powered by auxiliary sub-generators. These should be your first targets. This concludes the briefing. Good luck." | - | - |

AA18A: LIGHT CAVALRY HM[]
In the "MIA" mission, Pater pilots an AA18A: LIGHT CAVALRY HM unit. It is equipped with auxiliary boosters that take the shape of wings. It also has the same loadout as the Enforcement Officer LC, utilizing a rifle with an under-slung grenade launcher, and high mobility missiles in its right shoulder. It's auxiliary boosters give it true permanent flight capabilities, allowing it to fly around the battlefield at high speeds, pelting its targets from a safe distance while avoiding incoming fire with ease. As a final bit of kit, it has even more missile launchers hidden away in its wings, which it can fire vertically, or in a massive volley after swiftly flying away from the player.

In the Japanese script, V.V Hawkins refers to him with the honorific 君, which is replaced in the English version with the familiar term "son."[1]
Trivia[]
- Pater is the character that undergoes the most changes in rank in the game. While initially starting out as V.VIII, Pater rises in rank throughout the game, and his final rank depends on certain choices and routes the player takes:
- If the player chose to complete Intercept the Redguns, he will become "V.VI Pater" in the mission Escape.
- If the player chose Ambush the Vespers, he becomes "V.V Pater" in Escape.
- In the Alea Iacta Est route on the mission MIA, Pater becomes "V.III", the highest rank he is seen as ingame, a good hint as to the dire state of the corporations by that point in the mission.
- Pater's callsign is a possible reference to Walter Pater, a 19th century English essayist, art and literary critic, and novelist.
- His arena profile and AC name seems to suggest Pater is suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder, a mental illness characterized by the mind harboring multiple personalities (essentially, having a "dual nature").
- This is evident in his first encounter where if V.V Hawkins is killed first, he'll go into a distraught and mournful state at the loss of his friend, then suddenly be joyful at the idea of taking his former friend's position as 5th squad leader, all in the span of a few moments after Hawkins is killed.
- The other time this is evident is his final encounter where Pater laments the death of his other comrade: V.III O'Keeffe. A few seconds after his emotional breakdown, he then sheds all form of empathy towards O'Keeffe and is again happy at the idea of making 3rd squad leader, the position previously coveted by the same friend he was angrily mourning just a few moment ago.
- Contrary to some fan speculation, his initial reactions to Hawkins & O'Keeffe's deaths strongly indicates that Pater isn't a sociopath.
