V.VII Swinburne is a Generation Seven augmented human serving as an Armored Core pilot and the seventh squad leader of the Arquebus Corporation's elite squad of augmented humans, the Vespers.[1]
He is ranked 23/E in ALLMIND's virtual Arena.
Biography[]
V.VII Swinburne is a member of the Vespers, Arquebus Corporation's elite AC pilot squad consisting almost entirely of augmented humans. He received Generation Seven augmentations surgery, which is the first generation to successfully implement a viable substitute for Coral-based augmentation, and thus was significantly safer and had fewer side effects than all prior generations. Despite his piloting capabilities being enhanced, Swinburne suffered from an inferiority complex, making him convinced that his augmentations were much less effective than they should be and could have unknown long-term side effects. This exacerbated his insecurities into paranoia, a rigid obsession with adhering to Arquebus's code of conduct, and cowardice.[1] As V.VII of the Vespers, Swinburne is the head of the Vespers' seventh MT squad, and also manages the organization's finances.[2]
During the Coral War, after Arquebus occupies The Wall in Rubicon 3's Belius region, Swinburne is appointed head of security for the base and deploys his seventh squad with monitoring devices in order to catch any spies and saboteurs who venture into the area. As part of their plan to retake The Wall from Arquebus, the Rubicon Liberation Front hires C4-621 to assassinate Swinburne, which would leave the seventh squad leaderless in the face of a follow-up assault by RLF forces. After evading the Vespers' security measures, C4-621 discovers that Swinburne was lured away from his post and backup by another hostile force, possibly from Balam Industries. C4-621 can either carry out a surprise attack against the distracted Swinburne, or approach and wait for him to notice. Either way, Swinburne initially displays considerable bravado in the ensuing battle, only for his confidence to crumble as his AC is worn down. When his Repair Kits are exhausted, he pleads with C4-621 to spare his life and let him go in exchange for a monetary reward from the Vespers.[2]
If C4-621 declines Swinburne's offer, or accepts and then attacks him anyway before he departs the area, then Swinburne is killed. If C4-621 accepts the offer, V.VIII Pater subsequently provides the promised reward, but adds that Swinburne's conduct was shameful and dishonored the Vespers, so V.II Snail ordered that he be sent off for re-education.[2]

Gameplay[]
In ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON, Swinburne is an NPC who can be fought in the Arena and the RLF mission "Eliminate V.VII."
During the mission, the player can ambush him or instead purposely alert him to their presence by revealing themselves by getting near him; in the case of the latter, he will initially mistake C4-621 for a grunt then take half a second of inaction before he finally realizes who they are. After he is dealt enough damage, he will offer the player a chance to renege on the RLF contract; refusing will continue the fight, whereas accepting will result in Swinburne leaving the area, only for Rokumonsen to arrive and attack the player for breaking the contract.
If the player accepts Swinburne's offer and attacks him before he flies off, he will instantly die regardless of damage dealt, leading to lines of unique dialogue for both him and Ayre, as well as completing the mission.

Trivia[]
- The Arquebus ADD Head part VE-44B was made to accommodate a proposal from Swinburne, which ironically he does not use.[3]
- Swinburne's emblem depicts the practice of lobotomy, a highly controversial neurosurgery procedure that involves severing parts of the brain, supposedly to cure several forms of mental illnesses.
- Swinburne's mid battle surrender and bargaining is based on Patch the Good Luck followed by its incarnations of him.
- Should the player spare Swinburne during a story playthrough, the player will receive a message from Pater notifying them that he was sent to "re-education" by Snail for dishonoring the Vespers. In the Liberator of Rubicon route, this would later be revealed as a euphemism for forced brainwashing.
- Swinburne's callsign is a possible reference to Algernon Charles Swinburne, a late 19th/early 20th century English poet, playwright, novelist, and critic.
- The precise wording Swinburn's Japanese arena profile uses for "replacement" is 代替 daitai which can also be translated as "alternative"
