The Vascular Plant is a gargantuan Coral siphon on Rubicon 3. In the final stages of the Coral War, it becomes the key to the future of the planet, the Coral, and humanity.
Overview[]
Originally built by the Rubicon Research Institute, the Vascular Plant was lost with Institute City during the Fires of Ibis. Fifty years later, the towering structure was rediscovered amid the Coral War and then extended beyond Rubicon 3's Kármán Line, over 100 kilometers above the planet's surface, by Arquebus Corporation, which used it to gather all of the Coral into one place for interstellar export.
In the Fires of Raven ending, C4-621 "Raven" carries out Overseer's plan to burn the Coral and prevent a disaster known as Coral Collapse by defending the colony ship Xylem long enough for it to ram the Vascular Plant. This ignites the Coral, causing the Vascular Plant to explode and unleash an interplanetary firestorm known as the "Fires of Raven". All known Coral is obliterated, and Rubicon 3 is permanently abandoned.
In the Liberator of Rubicon ending, C4-621 downs the Xylem before it can impact the Vascular Plant, saving the Coral from destruction. At the same time, the Rubicon Liberation Front launches a successful uprising against Arquebus and liberates the planet. Ayre expresses optimism that this turn of events will give humanity and Coral a chance to find a way to combine their potential and mutually benefit.
In the Alea Iacta Est ending, ALLMIND takes control of the Institute's weapons and crushes all Arquebus and RLF resistance to its plan to achieve Coral Release, then extends the Vascular Plant into space itself. C4-621 and Ayre, having chosen to align with ALLMIND, prevent a last-ditch attempt by Overseer to hijack the Xylem and ram the Vascular Plant. With the final obstacle to Coral Release defeated, ALLMIND determines that C4-621 and Ayre are no longer necessary and betrays them, sending G5 Iguazu to eliminate them atop LOC Station 31. C4-621 prevails, however, and Ayre seizes the Coral Release trigger, allowing them to implement Coral Release on their terms instead of ALLMIND's. Upon activation, all of the Coral inside the Vascular Plant condenses into a singularity, imploding the structure and then spreading Coral throughout the universe and merging it with humanity.
